What is the Made for KC BBQ Championship?

This is a truly unique, Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) sanctioned competitor’s series competition, open only to local Kansas City area barbeque teams! With the largest prize purse of $48,000, including the licensing opportunity ever offered in a KCBS-sanctioned BBQ contest and the opportunity for more, you don’t want to miss this!

The competition event will be held on June 9-10, 2023.

Who is hosting the Made for KC BBQ Championship?

The event is presented by Outstanding Hospitality Management (OHM) and is designed to name the featured BBQ-themed restaurant in the concession program at the Kansas City International Airport. OHM and the greater Vantage Airport Group (Vantage) team were awarded the concession program contract and won approval for the concept of enlisting local and minority-owned businesses for airport concessions. OHM is pleased to partner with Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) to present this annual barbeque competition.

Who is eligible to compete in the Made for KC BBQ Championship?

In order to compete in the Made for KC BBQ Competitor Series competition, you must meet the following qualifications by the date of the competition:

  • Your team must be registered and in good standing with KCBS for at least one year prior to the date of the competition.
  • The registered address for your team must be located in Missouri or Kansas AND within 60 miles of the Kansas City International (KCI) Airport.
  • Your team must have competed in a minimum of three KCBS sanctioned barbecue competitions in the past three years (2020-2022).

How do I register for the competition?

Interested qualifying teams can register through the KCBS website online at http://www.kcbs.us starting March 8th at 9:00 am through March 14th at midnight CST. All qualified entries will be placed into a drawing for the 45 available spots. The drawing will be held on March 15th at 5:00 pm CST & will be shown on the Kansas City Barbeque Society (@KansasCityBarbequeSociety) Facebook Live. Those chosen will be notified by Made for KC BBQ. How much does it cost to register for the competition?

There is no entry fee required until the teams have been selected in the lottery process. The team entry fee is $350 to be paid during registration on the KCBS website at http://kcbs.us

Ancillary contests (Bloody Mary and Anything Bacon) will have an entry fee of $50 each.

How many teams will be able to participate in the competition?

The competition has space for 45 teams to participate.

Are proteins being provided to the teams?

Yes, our intent is to level the playing field by providing all teams with high-quality proteins and to help offset the costs involved with the competition. Yes, brisket is being donated by Certified Angus Beef, pork is being donated by Prairie Fresh, and chicken sponsor will be announced soon. The meat will be picked when teams check-in for the contest on Friday, March 9th. Teams must use the proteins supplied for their turn-ins. substituting other proteins will lead to team disqualification.

What other amenities should the competing teams expect?

Ice and water are provided free of charge by Worth Harley Davidson, but will be self service. We are working on securing a generator, and teams will be notified of the cost for power if needed. Teams are welcome to bring their own generators.

What is the grand prize for the competition?

In addition to being awarded $25,000 purse to the Grand Champion Pitmaster or cook team of the Made for KC BBQ Championship, they will receive a licensing opportunity for one year in an 8,000 square foot competition-barbeque-themed restaurant located within the New Terminal at the Kansas City International Airport, and the menu will feature their award-winning recipes, as part of the overall concessions program.

Is there a further cost for the Grand Champion?

There will be no operating costs to the Grand Champion, OHM will build, furnish, staff, and operate the competition-barbeque-themed restaurant location in the airport. OHM will work with the Grand Champion Pitmaster or cook team to incorporate their winning barbeque recipes on the menu.

Is the competition open to the public?

Yes, the event is open to the public, and there are a number of activities specifically for guests to enjoy. There will be live music, food, and adult beverages available for sale. Admittance is free.

Will the public be allowed to sample barbeque prepared by those competing?

There will be food and beverages available for purchase for the public to enjoy; however, only KCBS-sanctioned judges will sample barbeque prepared by those competing at the event.

Will the Made for KC BBQ Championship be held every year?

The Made for KC BBQ Championship will be an annual event.

How will the Made for KC BBQ Championship benefit the community?

One hundred percent of the proceeds generated by the event will go to local Kansas City charities.

How do I get certified to participate in future competitions?

The Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, celebrating, promoting, and educating the public about barbeque as a distinctively American cuisine. KCBS sanctions nearly 400 barbeque contests worldwide each year; including destination contests such as the American Royal World Series of Barbeque© and the Jack Daniel’s Invitational.

What are the categories for judging?

The categories being judged that count towards the Grand Champion prize are Chicken, Pork Ribs and Brisket, the standard required categories for a KCBS sanctioned contest. In addition, on Friday night, there will be two ancillary contests, Bloody Mary and Anything Bacon, sponsored by 360 Vodka and Daily’s Bacon.

Will there be a waiting list in the event a chosen team is not able to participate?

Yes, there will be a waitlist. The lottery drawing will choose an additional 15 teams to be waitlisted should one of the original 45 chosen teams be unavailable or fail to meet the requirements.
